Steve Williams, mayor of Huntington, has officially filed his precandidacy to run for the Democratic nomination for West Virginia’s Governor.

We asked Mayor Williams about his run and he said:

“The success we have had in Huntington can be replicated in other cities. As Mayor of Huntington I have had to deal with the opioid epidemic, fiscal challenges, infrastructure overhaul, and economic challenges. We have created tax incentives to create jobs, eliminated business taxes, and have amazingly increased our revenue from a $40 million budget to a $60+ million budget. We cut taxes and increased revenues.”

“I am the only candidate who has served as chief executive and I can lead the state and local communities to address their most serious issues by creating innovative solutions. As Governor I will see that West Virginia will set standards that the rest of the nation will seek to emulate.” STEVE WILLIAMS

Williams was elected mayor in 2012, 2016, and 2020 becoming the first three-term mayor in the city’s history.  He previously served in the House of Delegates and Huntington City Council.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Marshall University and a master’s in public administration from WVU.  He played football for Marshall University for four years.  Professionally he worked in the investment banking and brokerage industries.

Steve Williams is married to Mary Poindexter Williams.  He has two stepdaughters, Nikki Read and Laura Urban.
