Lisa Smith, Former WV Senator Killed In House Fire in SC

Gaffney, South Carolina – Lisa Denise Smith, a former Putnam County West Virginia Delegate and State Senator, has tragically passed away in a house fire in South Carolina. 

Smith, 59, had served two terms in the West Virginia House of Delegates and made headlines in 2002 when she defeated Democratic Senator Oshel Craigo. 

Lisa Smith’s political career experienced highs and lows. Following her unexpected victory over Senator Craigo, she served in the West Virginia Senate before resigning in December 2004, citing undisclosed health reasons. However, legal troubles followed her in 2006 when she and her husband, Mark, were indicted and later convicted on multiple charges related to tax evasion.

She is survived by her three children.  No arrangements are known at this time.
