The Cabell County Public Library posted this statement on its Facebook page late Wednesday night:

“Hello! It has come to our attention that someone has used the Cabell County Public Library logo to create a flier and/or online posts promoting a youth event. This is a fake flier. Our logo and information was used without our consent. Individuals or groups must contact and receive approval through the library to utilize our space or use our logo. We appreciate all of our users and supporters and are happy to serve all through our fantastic library-sponsored events and resources. Our dedicated staff has created some amazing programs for all ages. Please see our website or newest issue of our newsletter to see all of our scheduled Summer Reading events. We hope to see you at one of our many programs this summer!”

The flier in question promoted a “Drag Time Story Hour” on June 21st at the main library.

The main library does have many summer reading events that are featured on its website.  However, none of these events are “drag” related.

“Drag” events focused on audiences of children have come under increased scrutiny and opposition nationally among legislators.

The West Virginia legislature introduced several bills aimed at blocking “drag shows” in the most recent regular session.  These bills included Senate Bill 103 introduced by lead sponsor Senator Eric Tarr who after redistricting now represents the northern portion of Cabell County.  Tarr’s bill as introduced stopped any government entity funds from being used to host “drag shows” and banned the involvement of minors in any way and the attendance of minors.  These bills all stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Drag Queen Story Hours” in other West Virginia communities like Morgantown have been canceled in the past over threats of violence to participants.
