Former Huntington City Council Chair Jennifer Wheeler-Newhouse announced today that she has filed her pre-candidacy paperwork and intends to run for Huntington’s top job. She currently serves as the Director of Development at Huntington Museum of Art and was previously elected from the city’s 4th council district prior to resigning due to moving slightly outside the district boundary.

Wheeler-Newhouse previously worked in the Office of the Cabell County Assessor and served as the Director of Marketing at the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau. She holds a Masters of Science from Mountain State University. Wheeler is married to Cabell County Administrator Ben Newhouse.

While Wheeler-Newhouse is one of the first to declare her candidacy there are a number of candidates who are anticipated to run for the mayoral seat. Other names that have been mentioned include Democrats – City Manager – Hank Dial, HMDA Executive Director – Cathy Burns, Magistrate – Dan Ferguson, and Republican – Director of Public Works Mark Bates.

The Democrat primary looks to be heavily contested and anyone’s race. Current Mayor Steve Williams was unopposed in the 2020 primary where 3,782 votes were cast.
