Chuck Zerkle

Quietly and without fanfare – Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle has changed his political registration to Republican. This leaves Cabell Circuit Clerk Michael Woelfel as the lone elected Democrat in the courthouse. (Magistrates are non-partisan offices)

Cabell County has become a majority Republican county in the last year with the bulk of Democrats living inside the city limits of Huntington. Statewide Republicans hold an 8% majority over Democrats with an additional 272,818 voters listed with no party affiliation.

Zerkle is a very popular second-term Cabell County Sheriff. He is term-limited in this position. He has not yet announced official plans to run for a future office. He ran unopposed in his last (2020) election. Prior to being Sheriff, Zerkle served 25 years with the West Virginia State Police and retired as a Captain. He has also owned the Apple Grove Market for more than 20 years.
